  • When have I ever worshiped those slave owners?

Also very weird take. The revolution was started by the wealthy. It wasn’t some grassroots rebellion. It was backed by the authority of the individual colonial governments. So each state’s colonial government joined in to rebel. That’s a lot different than expecting some protesters to start a sustained rebellion.

To be clear my previous comment wasn’t talking about The American Revolution. It was talking about the general concept of revolutions. Historically they can work, but as I explained that’s a lofty thing to expect an individual to start

  • I’m not saying revolution doesn’t work, historically it does. But your judgement is not very practical. If you act as an individual you get arrested for terrorism and the state charges you with the death penalty. You riot the state brings in the riot police to bash your face in. You truly revolt and they bring in the tanks and declare martial law. Martial law would greatly benefit the current administration.

I don’t know how to get around these obstacles, and I suspect neither do you. I have a whole hell of a lot more respect for those that leave their homes to protest injustice than those that stay at home and do nothing other than critize people for trying. I don’t see you volunteering to fire the first shot in either my country or yours. So until you are ready to take that leap maybe don’t critize those trying to do something. Or come up with a criticism more constructive than “why don’t you just commit crimes and risk everything including your life”. That’s a lot to ask of anyone

  • Funny how every state that succeeded listed defending the institution of slavery as a reason for leaving the union and subsequently joining the confederacy.

I think the most accurate statement is the Confederate states left the Union to preserve the institution of slavery. The Union originally only sought to bring back the Confederate states and end the open rebellion. Lincoln was much more interested in restoring the Union than ending slavery, and in the early part of the war would have absolutely allowed slavery to continue if it meant ending the rebellion. Thus, restoring all states to the United States. However, as the war progressed it became clear there would be no easy resolution. Through the Emancipation Proclamation he was able to break the power behind southern production, the slaves, and push forward abolition. A cause he personally was always favorable towards, but unwilling to sacrifice the Union for.

  • I don’t know why this has to keep being repeated. It’s not hard.

Free speech does not mean you are entitled to have a private entity like a website host your content or speech.

He is welcome to sing this on the streets. He is welcome to publish this himself, be it hosted by a website he creates or in a physical medium.

He is not entitled to it being placed on retail shelves. He is not entitled to have it hosted on YouTube or Spotify.

This isn’t hard. The government of the United States has made absolutely no moves to silence this song. He can sing it and personally distribute it as much as he wants. But no one can be forced to distribute it for him

  • Right, but the anthropologist in me does have issues with that kind of data as applied to the US.

Living standards have not been significantly lower in any way to those countries, but we’ve experienced a sharp downturn in birthrates in the past 5 years. We were a 1st world nation by any measure for the past 100+ years, but our rates remained well above replacement levels.

So what is the cause for the downturn now for the US? I don’t believe that can be explained with Finland’s or Canada’s historical birth rates.
