Happy to help!
I’ll look into that. Thanks!
That’s on my list! I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Right now, the idea is to compare the features against Pocket, at least to start. Would you want to compare any 2 options?
TIL! Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback. I just added the link to the description.
(I didn’t expect adding an image to remove my link)
Graphene is likely to run into issues soon. They were relying on the AOSP source tree including Pixel-specific files. Google isn’t releasing those anymore, so GrapheneOS would have to reverse engineer or extract the needed files somehow.
That’s true for LineageOS, etc too, but they have more releases on non-Pixel phones so they may weather the storm better.
Of course, if you bought a Fairphone, my impression is that these problems go away. It’s just a matter of their policies. I’m a huge fan of the idea of their phones but I don’t own one.
Yeah, I wish it wasn’t true. I miss my smaller phone. The one I have now is too big to be comfortable. Unless there’s significant money in it, manufacturers can’t justify the expense of making a smaller phone.
That said, it’s a chicken-and-egg problem. A lot of people want a smaller phone. However, they can’t even buy one. And the manufacturers can’t tell that people want a smaller one because it’s not possible to buy one. It might remain that way until one manufacturer takes a leap, makes a small phone, and it goes well.
I’ve made some updates. There are many perspectives to view a guide like this. I hope there are some improvements to the self-hosting perspective. https://getoffpocket.com/
I’ll think about that. It’s to the right on desktop, but it’s not quite as nice on mobile, is it.
You can certainly do that, but read-it-later apps offer offline reading and other features that many people enjoy. It could be worth a second look, but if you have something that works for you, that’s great
Certainly RSS adjacent! Definitely different purposes, as you’ve described. Wallabag and FreshRSS are a nice combination.
Glad to hear you’re trying Wallabag! I made this tool that could be helpful for others in your situation: https://benjaminoakes.github.io/pocket-to-wallabag/ It sidesteps the Pocket API entirely.
You have some good feedback. Thanks for taking the time to provide it.
Thanks for the feedback!
Omnivore is still around as an open source project. There’s no official hosting. That may need to be represented better.
As far as I know Pocket is completely shutting down. It would be big news if it isn’t. I heard some things about someone buying it, but the Pocket website hasn’t been updated in a couple weeks since I heard that first.
It’s a good point about Pocket being listed. There are some plans to make it easier to compare alternatives to Pocket and that’s why it’s there. A bit of a partially finished thought right now, given that I pulled that out of what was released. I’ll look at hiding it.
It takes a lot of effort to make something like this. I appreciate any support people are willing to provide so I can continue improving it.
Thank you to everyone who commented! I’m digesting all of what has been said and will be adjusting the guide as I can. If you’re able, donations are welcome! (See link on the site)
Do you know if there is any interest in resurrecting it?
Good question! I know Wallabag has some eReader integrations through KOReader. People on Kobo devices seem to like it especially. There may be other options too. I’ll look at this some more! I’d appreciate anyone sharing details that they know too.
Offline reading and organizing for starters
